When the missile man comes in, one of the names is that of former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. His contribution to reaching the heights of India’s missile programme is incomparable. His fondness for science and scientists was that even as president, scientists consulted him and he was also very happy about it. Kalam was also part of the project when India sent its first rocket from Kerala Thumba into space. Vikram Sarabhai was not only his boss but also his guru. It is not easy for anyone to match them. Kalam was also recognized all over the world for his work as well as his hair style.
He was born on 15th Of October 1931 in Rameswaram. Kalam was the 11th President of the country from 2002-2007. He was also awarded the country’s highest honour in 1997. Earlier, he had received the Padma Vibhushan Samman in 1981, Padma Bhushan in 1990. Kalam was always in his studies even after his absence. He had a degree in Physic and Aerospace Engineering. In the last year of graduation, all the students were given a project which was to be completed within the stipulated time. The project belonged to a fighter jet flying at a low altitude. He completed it in his hard-won time and won the hearts of his teachers.
It was under the leadership of the APJ that India conducted its second nuclear test in Pokhran on May 11, 1998. The test shook the whole world. The test made India a nuclear power. The US intelligence satellites, which were constantly monitoring India, could not even be known about the mission. After the test, the US had imposed a series of sanctions on India. Even after that, India moved forward strongly and today it is a great power.
